If someone is off sick for 7 calendar days or less (including weekends), they do not need a fit note. They can tell their employer they’re not well enough to work. They do not need to provide medical evidence.
This is called ‘self-certifying’ their sick leave. If you are absent from work, your employer may ask you to complete a self certification form which is produced by HMRC. The Practice is not responsible for issuing this form however the link below will take you to the national self certification form which you can access and complete yourself. Please note that some employers have their own forms and may require you to complete one regardless of the duration of absence.
In some instances some employers may request you to provide a medical fit note to cover your first 7 days of absence. Fit notes are only free if the employee has been ill for more than 7 days when they ask for one. We will charge a fee if the employee has been ill for 7 days or less.
Once you have been absent from work for more than 7 days, you will qualify for a free Med3 Fit Note to verify your sickness. We will only be able to issue fit notes once you have had a consultation with one of our clinicians.
Employees can get a fit note from the following healthcare professionals:
The fit note will say the employee is either ‘not fit for work’ or ‘may be fit for work’.
If it says the employee ‘may be fit for work’, employers should discuss any changes that might help the employee return to work (for example, different hours or tasks). The employee must be treated as ‘not fit for work’ if there’s no agreement on these changes.
